NEWS & LEARNING · MLB & MARKET
Milwaukee's NLCS sweep made the Brewers a -190 favorite to win the World Series, while the Rays-Guardians ALCS heads to Game 5. Here is how the market and the betting map line up.
- Favorite: Brewers -190 to win the World Series at DraftKings
- ALCS: Rays and Guardians tied 2-2 heading into Game 5 on Oct. 18
- First pitch: World Series Game 1 in Milwaukee on Friday, Oct. 23
The Milwaukee Brewers are four wins from their first championship, and sportsbooks believe they will get there. After sweeping the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, Milwaukee is a -190 favorite to win the World Series at DraftKings. Its opponent will be either the Tampa Bay Rays or the Cleveland Guardians, whose American League Championship Series is tied 2-2 heading into Game 5 on Sunday, October 18.
There is an unusual twist for the betting market. Of the three states whose teams are still alive, Wisconsin is the only one without legal mobile sports betting. Ohio and Florida residents can bet on their teams from their phones, but most Brewers fans in Wisconsin cannot, at least not through a licensed online sportsbook.
Here is how the World Series market looks, how the series got here, and how the US betting map shapes the action.

World Series Odds
| Team | DraftKings odds | Implied probability |
|---|---|---|
| Milwaukee Brewers | -190 | 65.5% |
| Cleveland Guardians | +340 | 22.7% |
| Tampa Bay Rays | +450 | 18.2% |
Odds as of October 17, via FOX Sports. Implied probabilities include the sportsbook's margin.
A -190 price means a bettor must risk $190 to win $100 on Milwaukee. The Brewers were +105 earlier in the week, before they completed the sweep and the Dodgers were eliminated. Cleveland is priced ahead of Tampa Bay despite the series being tied, which reflects home field in Game 5 and the books' read of the matchup with Milwaukee.
How the Brewers Got Here
Milwaukee's path ran through the Padres in the Division Series and then the Dodgers in the NLCS, where the Brewers won 2-1, 7-4, 6-2 and 6-4. The Dodgers hit just .185 as a team in the series.
The formula was consistent:
- A dominant bullpen. DL Hall and JoJo Romero each won two games, while Trevor Megill and Aaron Ashby split the four saves.
- Run creation without power. Brice Turang scored six runs and drew five walks. David Hamilton stole three bases.
- Clutch hitting. Jake Bauers drove in six runs and was named NLCS MVP.
Milwaukee beat Tarik Skubal in a 2-1 Game 1, a result that set the tone. The Brewers last played in the World Series in 1982, when they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. They have never won it.
The ALCS: Still a Coin Flip
| Game | Result |
|---|---|
| 1 | Guardians 7, Rays 3 |
| 2 | Rays 3, Guardians 1 |
| 3 | Guardians 3, Rays 2 |
| 4 | Rays 7, Guardians 3 |
Tampa Bay reached the ALCS by sweeping the New York Yankees, while Cleveland needed five games to eliminate the Chicago White Sox. In Game 4, Junior Caminero, Jonathan Aranda and Yandy Díaz powered the Rays' offense, and Nick Martinez delivered a strong start.
Game 5 is in Cleveland on Sunday at 5 p.m. ET. Games 6 and, if needed, 7 shift to Tampa Bay on Monday and Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.
The Betting Map: Three States, Three Very Different Rules
The three remaining teams play in states with very different sports betting laws, and that shapes where World Series money comes from.
| State | Team | Mobile betting | What fans can do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wisconsin | Brewers | Not legal | In-person betting at tribal casinos only |
| Ohio | Guardians | Legal | Statewide mobile and retail sportsbooks |
| Florida | Rays | Legal via Hard Rock Bet | Mobile betting through the Seminole Tribe |
Wisconsin: Tribal Betting Only
Wisconsin allows sports betting only in person at tribal casinos under compacts with the state. There is no statewide mobile sports betting, so a Brewers fan in Milwaukee who wants to place a legal wager on a regulated sportsbook app would need to cross into a neighboring state with mobile betting, such as Illinois, Michigan or Iowa, and place the bet while physically located there. Sportsbook apps use geolocation to confirm where you are, so a Wisconsin address does not matter, but your location at the moment of the bet does.
Wisconsin is also one of the states at the center of the prediction market fight. The Ho-Chunk Nation has filed a federal lawsuit arguing that prediction sites threaten authorized tribal gaming, and the CFTC has moved against the state in the broader legal battle over event contracts. That makes Milwaukee's run a revealing test of how Wisconsin fans engage with the World Series market.
Ohio: A Mature Mobile Market
Ohio launched legal mobile and retail sports betting in 2023, and Guardians fans can bet on their team through any licensed operator, including FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars and Fanatics. Ohio has been one of the more active states in regulating the industry, including fining Kalshi $5 million over its sports contracts.
Florida: Hard Rock Bet
Florida's mobile sports betting runs through Hard Rock Bet, operated by the Seminole Tribe under its compact with the state. Rays fans can bet on their team from anywhere in Florida through that app, while other national sportsbook brands are not available there. See our Hard Rock Bet review for details.

Breaking Down the -190
Is Milwaukee worth backing at this price? The arguments split cleanly.
Why the Brewers Are Favored
- Home field. Milwaukee hosts Games 1, 2, 6 and 7.
- Rest. The Brewers finished the NLCS on October 15 and will have more than a week off before Game 1. That gives their bullpen time to recover.
- A tired opponent. The AL champion will have played at least six ALCS games and used its best relievers heavily.
- Form. Milwaukee swept the most talented roster in baseball.
Why the Underdog Has a Case
- Baseball variance. Short series are notoriously unpredictable. A single hot starting pitcher can change everything.
- Rust. Long layoffs can disrupt hitters' timing, and the debate over rest versus rust comes up every October.
- Payouts. At +340 or +450, a $100 bet returns $340 or $450 in profit. If you think the AL winner has more than a 25% chance, the value is on the underdog.
A Practical Approach
If you like Milwaukee, there is little reason to bet now. The Brewers' price is unlikely to shorten dramatically before the ALCS ends, and waiting lets you see the matchup and the Game 1 starters. If you like an AL team, the current futures price pays more than you will likely get once the matchup is set, but it carries the risk of that team losing in the ALCS first.
How a Hedge Works on a World Series Futures Ticket
Many bettors who placed preseason World Series futures are now holding live tickets on the Brewers, Rays or Guardians. A hedge lets you lock in a profit no matter who wins. Here is a simplified example.
Say you bet $100 on the Rays to win the World Series at +2000 back in the summer. If Tampa Bay wins the ALCS, your ticket is worth $2,100 (your $100 stake plus $2,000 profit) if the Rays then beat Milwaukee. Before Game 1, you could bet on the Brewers to win the series. At -190, a $1,000 bet on Milwaukee would return about $526 in profit.
- If the Rays win, you collect $2,100 from your futures ticket and lose the $1,000 hedge, for a net gain of about $1,000 on your original $100.
- If the Brewers win, you lose your original $100 and collect $526 on the hedge, for a net gain of about $426.
You give up some upside in exchange for a guaranteed profit. Whether that makes sense depends on how much risk you are comfortable with. There is no single right answer, and you can also hedge game by game instead of on the series price.
Markets to Watch
Once the matchup is set, sportsbooks will offer a range of World Series markets:
- Series winner and exact result, such as Brewers 4-2.
- Total games, usually over or under 5.5.
- World Series MVP, often won by a hitter on the winning team.
- Game lines, including moneyline, run line and totals.
- Player props, such as hits, home runs and strikeouts.
- Live betting, which is especially popular during the World Series. Our live betting guide explains how in-play odds move.
